Ahead of premiering his sophomore outing “Sparrows” at Toronto, Icelandic helmer Runar Runarsson sat with Variety in Haugesund to discuss his film’s aspiration, themes and the experience of shooting in Iceland. Set in summertime, “Sparrows” is a coming-of-age tale chronicling the journey of a 16-year-old who has been living in Reykjavik with his mother and is sent back to live with his estranged father in a seen-better-days Icelandic fishing village. Sparrows to compete at San Sebastián International Film Festival
San Sebastian Fest revealed bulk of international Golden Shell contenders. Among sophomore outings, and sparking good word of mouth at January’s Goteborg Works in Progress, Runar Runarsson’s “Sparrows” is a coming of age tale set in Iceland’s spectacular Westfjords, Runarsson’s debut, “Volcano,” bowed at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2011.
